As
a tribute to the area’s rich maritime heritage, the exterior counters at
Starboards were constructed from the same lumber used by local boat builders to
build the
Pilot Schooner
Virginia.
“We cater to many boaters from Ocean Marine and Tidewater
Marina,” according to Betsy Cartier. “As a result, we wanted a nautical theme
that tied into the area’s marine heritage”, she states. The construction of the
Pilot Schooner Virginia provided that opportunity.
David
Cartier was given the lumber by former Capt. Robert C. Glover III. He served as the Executive Direc
tor of the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation.
The Cartiers hired Mike Finlason, a local contractor, to design
and build the exterior counters at The Kiosk. The lumber, known as WANA, was
brought from South America for the construction of Virginia’s Tall Ship.
A plaque is mounted on the shelves at Starboards to
commemorate Pilot Schooner Virginia.
In 2007, The
Pilot Schooner
Virginia
came in first place in
The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. In
doing so, they set a speed record with the fastest time ever recorded. The
18th annual event hosted thirty schooners racing from Annapolis, Maryland
to Portsmouth, Virginia. This year the event will be held October 15 to
18, 2008. Many of the vessels can be seen from High Street Landing and
North Landing.
